Gunnery Sergeant, Jason Baxter, had his keys out and running
full speed down the crowded narrow hallway towards the munitions lockers. There's no time to waste, we’re in Red
Alert. Go, go, go, go!
rushed through his mind. His hands quivering. The keys jingling nervously.
"Where's that damn master key?"
As Baxter rounded the corner from the narrow hallway, the
munitions cage attendant, Jacobs called out, “Throw the keys here Gunny, I’ll
get em rollin.”
All of the militia members who were on call that day dropped
what they were doing and began double timing to and fro around the compound
when they heard the Red Alert blaring in their ears as if it rang in their
personal headsets.
Baxter flung the keys in the direction of the cage’s window
as if he were the star of today’s championship basketball game with one point
down, and he had only seconds left to throw that long ball clear across the court
to score the needed points to win the game.
Jacobs had his hands out like the small almost nonexistent
hoop which was so far away and ready to catch that long “Hail Mary” toss.
Smack! The keys hit dead center in the Jacobs hands. “Two
points, Gunny,” Jacobs called out; Gunny just smiled as he made his way through
the crowded area to the cage.
Without further ado, the members of the Lexington Militia
had fallen in formation at the cage area to receive their weapons and
ammunition.
Upon receipt of their equipment, they began to double time
it to their assigned duty stations around the compound both inside and outside
of the compound, just like in their drills.
If one were to watch as they all worked efficiently and
precisely in manning their positions, one would think that they were a drill
team performing their routine on the football field at half time.
At that moment, Jefferson got a call on his Satellite Ultra
Frequency Random Accessing headset. This headset looks like a “Bluetooth” unit
but did not use radio frequency like the Bluetooth.
The SUFRA headset was cutting edge technology that only the
Lexington Militia Unit had access to and was experimenting with it.
This
exclusive SUFRA headset has access to over one billion frequencies per
transmission, never duplicating the same signal more than once during any
transmission in a week’s period.
“Jefferson here.”
“General, this is Sergeant Brody Hensley on quarters patrol
here at your residence. I think you need to come home right away, sir.”
“Why Sergeant, what’s wrong?”
“I’d rather not say, sir. But it’s an emergency due to the
Red Alert.”
A long silence appeared on the SUFRA.
“General, are you there, sir?”
